Samosas and More – Food Photography

For Nooren Samosa, a beloved Calgary-grown family business known for its handcrafted, flavour-rich samosas made with fresh ingredients and a unique spice blend, we had the opportunity to capture the essence of their product in a way that makes viewers almost taste it through the screen. Great food photography combines visual storytelling with technical precision.

For this shoot, our focus was on showcasing texture, colour, and authenticity—highlighting the crispy, golden exterior of each samosa and the fresh fillings within. Achieving this required careful attention to lighting, composition, and styling to bring out the natural appeal of the food. Using diffused natural light and controlled artificial lighting, we balanced highlights and shadows to create depth and dimension, while ensuring accurate colour rendition that reflects the true quality of the product.

From selecting the right angles to deploying appropriate camera settings (such as a wide aperture for selective focus and a tripod for sharp, consistent framing), every technical choice contributed to images that are both appetizing and brand-aligned. Our approach also included thoughtful backdrop and prop selection, ensuring that the samosas remained the hero of each frame. Chapati and Bolani are popular food items in different cuisines.

Chapati is a traditional unleavened flatbread commonly consumed in Indian cuisine. It is made from whole wheat flour, salt, and water. The dough is rolled into thin discs and cooked on a hot griddle or tawa. They are often served with curries, dal (lentil soup), or other dishes. It is a versatile staple and can be enjoyed as a main accompaniment or used to wrap various fillings to make rolls or sandwiches.

Bolani is a type of stuffed flatbread originating from Afghanistan. It is made by rolling out a thin dough and filling it with a mixture of ingredients such as potatoes, leeks, spinach, or lentils. The filled dough is then folded and cooked on a griddle or fried until it becomes crispy and golden. Bolani is typically served as an appetizer, snack, or side dish. It is often accompanied by yogurt sauce or chutney for dipping.

Food Photography – Ingredients

Lighting: Proper lighting is crucial in food photography. Soft light is a first setup to go, but hard light is a popular trend.
Composition: the placement and the balance of items is important, the center of the image is not always the best.
Styling: is paramount, and it’s an established job: food stylist. Not every project can afford one but every cook has must have a skill for presentation.
Background: should complement and enhance the food. Simple is great, as it should not compete for attention with the food.
Props and utensils: while this project was rather simple, it doesn’t hurt to have appropriate props and utensils that suggest serving style.
Focus and depth of field: you may be tempted to use it, it could be a great ingredient of food photography but not a must. It’s in fashion for portraits, always has been, but not for food.
Editing and post-processing: enhance the images but over-editing can be an easy pitfall. Usually it’s removing crumbles, fixing some funny spots, but you have to know when to stop.

The ultimate goal of food photography is to make the viewer crave the food and capture its essence.

Kitchen Cabinet Wood Doors and Drawers

This was a challenging project as it required great colour accuracy as well as consistent angles and lighting.

A great deal of testing and adjusting goes on before establishing a standard and it was readjusted for different angles of the doors. Then the light angles, placement, intensity was recorded carefully. Camera settings must be reproduced also to have the same results for the next session. It is a meticulous and arduous job. It must be done because the next session you’ll be scratching your head wondering what was it that got you that look just a week ago. It doesn’t take much to deviate from the goal. Even the doors were placed carefully with markers, so I don’t deviate from the angles.
It seems like an easy project, but it was actually a lot of work.

Hoodies Ghosted Model

Ghosted Model

There is a bit of challenge to get these ghosted model photos done properly. Shooting and editing this style is a bit more time consuming than traditional apparel photography. A ghosted model has its merits. It is a novel way to look at garments, a bit of a surprise for the viewer, a bit perplexing as of how this is done. If the budget allows it, this is a great compliment to a real model shoot. To me that is still the first choice, natural, engaging.

Deceptivly simple , there’s nothing easy about this photo shoot. I wish I was smart enough, to make these photos happen in an hour or so but it takes a bit longer than that. From filling the bag with the right amount of beans, controlling the wrinkles, placing, lighting, to further cleanup in editing and the path to success is long and an uphill battle. Good presentation is key to success in sales. The product may be great, and that will always play a major role, but you also need to dress for success. Show a good bean in the best light.
